7 Tips for Making New Years Resolutions Stick

For many of us, the new year represents an opportunity for a fresh start. We self-reflect and identify areas we want to improve on in 2019 and make our New Year’s Resolution(s). Various surveys show that nearly half of all Americans make resolutions. Here are the most popular New Year’s resolutions according to Google searches pulled by iQuanti, a data-driven digital marketing company:

  • Get Healthy (39%)
  • Get Organized (21%)
  • Live Life To The Fullest (12%)
  • Learn New Hobbies (11%)
  • Spend Less / Save More (10%)
  • Travel (4%)
  • Read More (3%)

Unfortunately, the fact is that resolutions usually fail after the first week and 40% have been forgotten about after a month. Here are a few tips to make your New Year’s Resolutions stick:

  1. Be Reasonable.
Make your resolutions something you think you can keep. For example, if you want to work out on a regular basis – don’t commit to an everyday exercise regimen if, in reality, you won’t make it to the gym more than 3 times a week.
  2. Focus on one area at a time.
Don’t feel that you have to reassess every aspect of your life. Pick 1 or 2 top priorities and focus on making changes in those areas for the new year.
  3. Bite Size Portions.
Create milestones that are in smaller chunks and are achievable.
  4. Have a Time-Frame
In addition to milestones, have a set time frame in which you would like to achieve these goals.
  5. Talk about it.
Share your goals and achievements, no matter how small, with family and friends. Having that extra support will make your journey more fulfilling.
  6. Reward yourself.
When you meet goals, reward yourself with something that does not contradict your resolution. Celebrate your successes.
  7. Keep It Up.
New habits don’t form overnight. It can take 21 days for an activity to become a habit if practiced daily.
